Operative Instructions

Eye surgeries require precision, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of ocular anatomy, and careful adherence to operative instructions is essential for a successful outcome.

Pre-Operative Instructions

  • Take a heavy breakfast or meal before surgery as most of the eye surgeries are done under topical or local anesthesia so there are no restrictions on food or water intake before eye surgery. 

  • Wash your hairs and face throughly with soap and water on the day of surgery as washing the hairs or face with water is not advisable for 3-4 days after the surgery. 

  • Kindly inform your eye specialist about all the medications at the first consultation itself. Do not stop your medicines of hypertension, diabetes, asthma or any other systemic condition without informing the doctor. There are very few medicines (e.g. Aspirin and medicines for prostate pathology) which need to be stopped before an eye surgery. Your eye specialist will inform you which medications are needed to be stopped and when. 

  • It is crucial to inform your eye specialist about any past trauma to your eyes, previous surgeries of eyes and any known drug allergies.

  • Read the consent form thoroughly, do not hesitate to ask any doubts before signing the consent form.

Post-Operative Instructions

  • Do not wash your hairs and face with soap and water at least for 3 days after surgery. Alternatively you can gently clean your face with a clean towel without touching your eyes.

  • There are no food restrictions after any eye surgery.

  • Avoid exposure to dust after the eye surgery. Make sure to wear protective eye glasses whenever you step out of the house at least for 7 days after the surgery. 

  • Do not stop your medications of any systemic diseases (e.g. hypertension, diabetes, asthma etc) unless specifically told by your eye specialist. 

  • Schedule of follow up visits after any eye surgery is — Day 1, 3, 7 and 28 after the surgery. 

  • Consult your eye specialist immediately if any of the below mentioned symptoms appear after the eye surgery — Excessive pain and redness, sudden drop of vision, intense headache, discharge from the eye. 

  • Post operative eye drops and medicines are crucial for the successful outcome of the surgery. Follow the schedule of your medications accurately as prescribed by your eye specialist.
