What is Glaucoma? Diagnosis & Treatment Options

Glaucoma is a disease where the optic nerve of the eye is damaged. There is no known cure for the disease, but treatment can help manage the condition. Glaucoma is diagnosed with tests or imaging. During an eye exam, we put drops in the eyes to make it easy to check intraocular pressure.

Glaucoma can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam that includes measuring the intraocular pressure (IOP), examining the optic nerve, and assessing the visual field. Other tests, such as pachymetry to measure corneal thickness, may also be performed to aid in the diagnosis. Once diagnosed, the treatment for glaucoma aims to lower the IOP to prevent further damage to the optic nerve. Treatment options include:

  1. Eye drops: Prescription eye drops are usually the first line of treatment for glaucoma. They work by either reducing the production of aqueous humor or improving its outflow. Eye drops must be used regularly and as prescribed to effectively lower IOP.

  2. Oral medication: In some cases, oral medications may be prescribed to lower IOP when eye drops are not sufficient or not well-tolerated.

  3. Laser therapy: There are different types of laser therapy that can be used to treat glaucoma, such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI). These procedures are typically performed on an outpatient basis and can be effective in reducing IOP.

  4. Surgery: If eye drops, oral medications, and laser therapy are not effective, surgery may be recommended. There are different types of glaucoma surgeries, such as trabeculectomy, tube shunt surgery, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). These procedures aim to create a new pathway for aqueous humor to drain out of the eye and lower the IOP.

It is important to note that glaucoma is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management and monitoring by an ophthalmologist. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to ensure that the treatment is working and to make any necessary adjustments.
